Loyalty programme

Also written: loyalty program, rewards programme

What Loyalty programme means

A loyalty programme is a structured guest retention initiative that rewards repeat stays and non-room spending with points, tier status, or exclusive perks. Distinct from retail schemes, hospitality programmes leverage guest data to drive direct bookings, lower acquisition costs, and increase lifetime spend across property portfolios.

Formula

Member Contribution Rate = (Total Member Room Revenue / Total Revenue) × 100

How it is used

Operators use loyalty schemes to shift bookings away from high-commission online travel agencies (OTAs) toward brand-direct channels. Revenue managers analyze member redemption patterns to establish dynamic reward pricing, ensuring points stays offset low-occupancy periods without cannibalizing high-demand nights. Hotel owners evaluate programme performance by tracking member contribution to total revenue, average spend per member, and redemption costs charged by the parent brand. The data collected drives targeted marketing campaigns, personalized guest experiences, and tailored promotional offers.

Worked example

A 200-room boutique hotel generates $6,000,000 in annual total revenue. If loyalty programme members account for $2,100,000 of that total, the Member Contribution Rate is ($2,100,000 / $6,000,000) × 100 = 35%. The manager uses this figure to justify lowering OTA inventory allocations by 10%.

Common mistake

Focusing solely on point accumulation without accounting for the liability costs on the balance sheet or brand reimbursement fees can erode net profit margins.
