Mobile key

Also written: digital key, keyless entry

Mobile key is a guest room access technology that allows travelers to unlock doors using an encrypted credential stored on their smartphone via Bluetooth or Near Field Communication (NFC), bypassing the traditional front desk check-in process.

How it is used

Hoteliers deploy digital keys to reduce check-in friction, lower front desk labor costs, and eliminate plastic keycard expenditure. Adoption directly boosts mobile app downloads and loyalty program enrollment, driving direct bookings. Operationally, revenue managers and GMs use mobile key data to track arrival patterns and room access times. Successful implementation requires upgrading door locks to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standards and integrating PMS platforms to issue credentials automatically upon guest verification.

Worked example

A 300-room city hotel installs BLE lock modules costing $150 per door ($45,000 total). By shifting 40% of guests to mobile keys, front desk staffing is reduced by 1.5 FTEs, saving $54,000 annually in labor. Additionally, replacing 30,000 magnetic keycards saves $4,500 per year, achieving full return on investment in under ten months.

Common mistake

Relying entirely on mobile keys without maintaining physical keycard backups can lock guests out when phone batteries die or BLE connectivity fails.
