Departure clean

Also written: checkout clean

A departure clean, distinct from residential deep cleaning, is the comprehensive sanitation and resetting of a guestroom following a checkout. Housekeeping staff replace all linens, restock amenities, sanitize all hard surfaces, and inspect the room to return it to ready-for-occupancy status.

How it is used

Executive housekeepers use departure cleans to allocate daily labor and calculate credits per room attendant. Because departure cleans require 25 to 45 minutes—roughly double the time of a stayover clean—front office and housekeeping teams continuously sync room status to prioritize early check-ins and optimize turn times. Inefficient departure cleaning creates check-in bottlenecks, increases overtime costs, and reduces guest satisfaction scores. High-volume properties monitor cleaning completion rates hourly to balance guestroom inventory against incoming arrivals.

Worked example

A 200-room hotel facing 120 departures assigns room attendants six credit points per shift. If a departure clean equals one credit (30 minutes) and a stayover clean equals 0.5 credits (15 minutes), the executive housekeeper schedules 10 attendants dedicated to departure cleans to turn all 120 rooms within a six-hour window.

Common mistake

Miscalculating the labor time required for departure cleans versus stayover cleans leads to understaffed shifts and delayed guest check-ins.
