Channel manager
A channel manager is a software platform that automatically synchronizes room inventory, rates, and availability across multiple online distribution channels, including online travel agencies, global distribution systems, and direct booking engines, in real time.
How it is used
Operators use channel managers to eliminate manual updates across extranets, reducing labor costs and human error. Real-time rate parity management prevents contract violations with OTAs, while instant inventory pooling maximizes room exposure without risking double-bookings. Revenue managers rely on channel managers to push dynamic pricing strategies simultaneously across all sales channels, opening or closing specific distribution streams based on demand forecasts, length-of-stay constraints, and channel acquisition costs.
Worked example
A 100-room boutique hotel updates its BAR (Best Available Rate) from $150 to $185 for an upcoming weekend. Instead of logging into Booking.com, Expedia, and Agoda individually, the revenue manager changes the rate once in the PMS. The channel manager pushes this $185 rate and updated inventory to all connected channels within seconds.
Common mistake
Relying on a channel manager with poor API connections can cause sync delays, leading to overbookings during high-demand periods.
