Performance & revenue

Pickup

Also written: room pickup

What Pickup means

Pickup is the net number of hotel rooms booked or cancelled for a specific future date or date range within a defined time frame. Distinct from total booking volume, it measures net booking velocity to help revenue teams adjust pricing and inventory controls.

Formula

Pickup = Total Rooms Booked on Target Date(s) at End of Period - Total Rooms Booked on Target Date(s) at Start of Period

How it is used

Revenue managers track pickup daily or weekly by segment, channel, and rate code to evaluate booking pace against historical trends and forecasts. Strong positive pickup indicates rising demand, prompting managers to increase rates, close discounted channels, or raise minimum length-of-stay restrictions. Conversely, flat or negative pickup—caused by cancellations exceeding new bookings—signals weak demand, triggering promotional campaigns or lower yield hurdles to stimulate volume before the stay date arrives.

Worked example

On Monday, a hotel has 120 rooms on the books for Friday night. By Wednesday morning, 25 new bookings come in and 5 cancellations occur for that same Friday, bringing the total committed inventory to 140 rooms. The two-day pickup for Friday night is +20 rooms (20 net rooms added).

Common mistake

Focusing solely on aggregate room pickup without analyzing segment breakdown can mask revenue loss if high-rate corporate bookings are replaced by low-rate group business.
