Operations

Manager on duty

Also written: MOD

The designated executive or senior leader responsible for managing overall hotel operations, guest safety, crisis response, and service quality during a specific shift, acting with full general manager authority when executive leadership is off-site.

How it is used

MOD shifts typically cover evenings, weekends, and holidays when department heads are absent. The MOD conducts floor walk-throughs, handles escalated guest complaints, audits night audit preparations, and oversees emergency procedures. Operational logs created by the MOD inform morning executive meetings, driving decisions on staffing adjustments, maintenance prioritizing, and service recovery budgets. Assigning MOD shifts across various department heads also develops cross-functional leadership skills and ensures continuous operational oversight.

Worked example

During a Saturday night shift, the MOD receives reports of a broken pipe flooding three third-floor guest rooms. The MOD immediately authorizes emergency relocation of the affected guests to a partner property, issues $150 compensation vouchers per room, and dispatches on-call maintenance to isolate the leak, resolving the crisis without waiting for Monday morning executive approval.

Common mistake

Assuming the MOD role is purely supervisory, leading to passive desk-bound shifts rather than proactive floor management and immediate crisis resolution.
