FIT

Also written: free independent traveller, free independent traveler

FIT (Free Independent Traveller) is an unorganized, non-group leisure guest who books accommodation individually rather than as part of a package or tour group. FITs typically pay higher average daily rates, book shorter stays, and manage their own itineraries.

How it is used

Revenue managers track FIT volume to balance high-yield individual bookings against discounted, guaranteed group blocks. Understanding FIT demand drives dynamic pricing strategies across direct and OTA channels. Operating with high FIT volume maximizes ADR and total guest spending on ancillary services like food and beverage, though it increases demand volatility compared to contracted group business. Operators optimize channel mix by offering targeted packages directly on brand websites to capture FITs while bypassing third-party commissions.

Worked example

A boutique hotel sells 15 rooms to a tour operator at a contracted group rate of $120 per night. On the same night, the revenue manager sells 30 rooms to FIT guests via direct and OTA channels at a dynamically priced average rate of $210, generating $6,300 from FIT revenue compared to $1,800 from the tour group.

Common mistake

Mislabeling corporate business travelers as FITs skews leisure demand forecasting and distorts channel yield strategies.
